The public must come to terms with the “new reality” that there are now fewer working royals, a former adviser has said.

Paddy Harverson denied the institution was “fragile” now that the King and Princess of Wales are being treated for cancer.

He told the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuensberg programme: “We just have to come to terms with the new reality, there are fewer of them.

“And so everyone just needs to understand that they’re still going to be busy, that they’re going to get through this. I am very confident that the King, whom I know well, is an incredibly strong, very resilient, great spiritual man, so I know he will make it.

“And likewise with the princess, s Katei think once they get over this sticky patch i think we’ll be back to normal.

“I think the nation just has to adjust, and so does the media and everyone who follows this, to a smaller family, but still very busy doing what they do in their own way.”

The Princess of Wales reiterated her request for privacy as her family stepped back after weeks of ominous speculation about her health, culminating in the shock revelation of her cancer diagnosis.

The speculation and pressure surrounding the Princess of Wales’ health and whereabouts ahead of her video statement was “the worst I have ever seen”, a former royal adviser said.

Paddy Harverson, who was previously an official spokesman for Kate and the Prince of Wales, was asked on the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuensberg program where responsibility for the pressure lay: social media or mainstream media.

“Well, it feeds on itself,” he said.

“It’s kind of a constant doom cycle. And it’s the worst I’ve ever seen.”

He added that it took time for the royal family to come to terms with Kate’s diagnosis.

“I’m absolutely convinced that if we hadn’t had all this craziness and social media, if we hadn’t had something like a Mother’s Day picture mistake, they would still have done it this way,” he said of Kate’s video statement in Friday.

“They would still wait until the last Friday when schools let out to make the announcement.”

Labor Party leader Annelise Dodds said she felt “tremendous sympathy” for the Princess of Wales as she watched her announce her cancer diagnosis on Friday night.

The shadow women and equalities secretary told Sky’s Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips programme: “I think I probably felt very similar to a lot of people who will have watched this show, I felt a huge amount of sympathy for her.

“Obviously this is an incredibly difficult time for her, as it is for anyone with this health condition, and I really want to wish Her Majesty all the best.

“I think she also speaks with a huge amount of hope and optimism and people who are in a similar situation, I’m sure, will take a lot of comfort from her words.”

Sharing a cute childhood photo of himself and Kate, James Middleton, 36, said on Instagram: “We’ve climbed many mountains together over the years.

“As a family we will climb this with you too.”

In a recorded video statement, she said the news came as a “huge shock” after it was discovered following her major abdominal surgery in January.

As the royal family faces a series of health problems, the close relationship between King Charles and his ‘beloved daughter-in-law’ has become increasingly apparent.
