Crooks was unstoppable in Friday’s first-round matchup against 10th-seeded Maryland, putting up the kind of stat line rarely seen at any level of organized basketball: The Iowa State center finished with a career-high 40 points and made an astonishing 18 of her 20 shots to help her team come back from a 20-point deficit to beat the Terrapins 93-85 and advance to the second round of the tournament. There, the Cyclones will face No. 1 seed and host Stanford on Sunday.

With a single performance, Crooks became the star of the first day of the tournament, setting social media on fire and earning praise from every corner of the country and seemingly every prominent voice in the sport (and even the Des Moines Police Department).

While people in Ames and elsewhere in Iowa are familiar with Crooks and her game, fans across the country are learning more about her as she continues to show that Caitlin Clark isn’t the only women’s basketball star in the state.
