Aetna Better Health® of Illinois partners with Kooth Digital Health, bringing mental health and wellness tools to thousands of teens and young adults

CHICAGO, March 26, 2024—(BUSINESS WIRE)–Kooth Digital Health, a mental health and wellness platform for young adults, today announced a partnership with Aetna Better Health® of Illinois. The year-long partnership will provide thousands of teenagers and young adults in Illinois with access to Kooth’s digital platform at no cost to the end user.

Evidence shows that teenagers and young people benefit from access to wellbeing tools to help develop better mental health skills and management. According to a report by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 61.8 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds in Illinois who have depression have not received any care. The same report shows that high school students with depression are more than twice as likely to drop out as their peers, and seven out of 10 youth in the juvenile justice system have a mental illness.

The Kooth platform offers young people access to safe, confidential and moderated content, community and professional support from licensed Illinois clinicians. Certain Aetna members will have free, on-demand access to Kooth resources, including:

  • Self-guided journeys including evidence-based therapeutic content and tools such as mood tracking, breathing, free writing and journaling podcasts, podcasts, videos, and more.

  • Safe, moderated public spaces for peer support.

  • Professional support via chat or ongoing, structured counseling sessions.

“Aetna is committed to pursuing innovative interventions to arm our members with health care solutions to build a healthier population across our state,” said Rushil Desai, CEO of Aetna Better Health of Illinois. “Our schools are Ground Zero of the mental health crises our children and teenagers face every day. By partnering with Kooth, we are providing a transformational service to our youngest members, providing real-time digital support for those facing complex issues. Our goal is to support them before a crisis occurs.”

Worldwide, 17 million people access Kooth’s support, helping teenagers and young adults dealing with stress, anxiety, depression and other challenges. Kooth Digital Health supports approximately 100,000 students in Pennsylvania. In California, more than 6 million people ages 13 to 25 now have access to Kooth’s platform through Soluna, which the state Department of Health Care launched in January 2024 as part of a historic $4.6 billion commitment to youth mental health.

Kooth’s Chief Digital Health Officer Patrick Johnston, MD, said: “The mental health crisis threatening our teenagers and young people is unprecedented in scale and scope. Fortunately, leaders in every corner of the United States appear poised to act. But action doesn’t just have to happen at the state or federal level. We can all make a difference. Aetna Better Health of Illinois’ decision to provide preventive care to teens and young adults proves that government, private businesses and nonprofits can offer teens and young adults the lifelines they deserve.”
